WE DON’T DO IT THAT WAY. WE COVER UP THE TARPAPER EVERY DAY.
1. I understand. It makes sense to do that as much as you can. Windstrips® just give you an option if unexpected circumstances arise (if the weather changes quickly or there are scheduling problems) . One or two rolls of Windstrips in your truck can make all the difference.
2. Windstrips® give you the choice how you want to do it.
IF I KNOW I NEED TO LEAVE A ROOF UNSHINGLED FOR A WHILE I WILL USE A SYNTHETIC UNDERLAYMENT (TRI-FLEX, TITANIUM UDL).
1. The reason these new underlayments came out is because organic tarpaper would fail if left out over time. With Windstrips that no longer happens.
2. Synthetic underlayments cost more than tarpaper secured with Windstrips®. Why use something that costs more when you don’t have to.
3. No one knows the long term effects of using these new underlayments. They haven’t been in use long enough to know how they will perform. They are made of plastics that don’t breathe and the long term risk of rot is a possibility. There have been reports recently that ice and watershield membranes that don’t breathe are causing roofers to have to replace plywood that has rotted underneath them.
4. Tarpaper is a known product with a tried and true history. Windstrips lets you can use that time tested product and have it perform just as well.
WHY IS IT THAT WINDSTRIPS® WORK SO WELL?
1. Windstrips are manufactured to specific tolerances from a proprietary blend of UV protected plastics that have been perfected through 14 years of field performance.
2. Windstrips keep your staples from pulling through the tarpaper.
3. They provide a continuous barrier at the critical point, the exposed edge of the tarpaper. This provides shade to the tarpaper and keeps it from breaking down in the sun. No matter how many big headed fasteners you use, the longer you leave them out in the sun the greater the damage form UV rays.
HOW COME I HAVEN’T SEEN THESE BEFORE?
1. Windstrips® have been in use in the Front Range of Colorado since January of 1994. They are a proven product with a proven track record. We have just teamed up just with Fasco America for this new Marketing Campaign in the United States and Internationally.
2. It’s hard for folks to get past the idea of using staples. It hasn’t worked up until now and we don’t recommend it without Windstrips®.
ARE WINDSTRIPS APPROVED FOR USE IN FLORIDA?
1. No. We applied for Metro Dade Approval but they said that staples are illegal to use. Our response to that is, “that’s unfortunate for their constituents”. Windstrips is a product that has proven to be more effective, more efficient, less expensive than alternatives and the only product that is guaranteed.
2. The current perceived standard is Metro Dade. This came about because of the media coverage surrounding the extreme damage from Hurricane Andrew. However when we were first looking for a wind tunnel test facility, we were asked by the people at those facilities “What do want to test it for?”. Their explanation was that Boulder and the Front Range of Colorado have 3 times as many high wind occurrences than the entire State of Florida per year. “ If it works in Boulder, it will work anywhere.”
3. Windstrips have been written into the Fort Collins, CO code as an accepted product for rough-in and mid-roof inspection approval.
4. Technically, most codes state that tarpaper needs to be held in place well enough so as to be intact when the shingles are installed. They rarely specifying how In Florida. Windstrips meets that requirement exceptionally well.
ABOUT OUR WARRANTY
1. Windstrips® is the only dry in protection that is guaranteed to work or we will pay for your lost underlayment.
2. We do not specify a top wind limit since to date they have withstood every high wind in Colorado since January of 1994, the highest of which was 128 mph.
3. Be forewarned, if you have a failure below 100mph it is probably because they weren’t installed properly. Be sure to watch our installation video. It will give you all the specifics you need to install Windstrips correctly.
4. If the windows and doors aren’t installed the paper can balloon out from under the Windstrips causing wind damage. It is rare but it can happen. It is usually in situations where a house is on a hillside with a beautiful view and one whole wall is mostly windows that haven’t been installed
5. We have offered this warranty in Colorado since 1995 and have never had a claim.
DO I HAVE TO STAPLE IT IN THE FIELD?
Yes. We have actually tried to put the minimal amount of staples in the field to hold the tarpaper just long enough to get the Windstrips installed on the laps. What happens when the wind gets high enough, it balloons the paper out from under the Windstrips®. There is also a safety issue where the tarpaper can slide too easily without enough staples in the field.
CAN YOU USE WINDSTRIPS TO INSTALL HOUSE WRAP?
1. We have not tested Windstrips with any other products. However, we have found in our experience at the International Builders Show, the International Roofing Expo and the Specialty Tool and Fastener Distributors Association conventions, that Windstrips is actually a fastener reinforcement product and most especially a staple reinforcement product. Anywhere you would want to use a staple but don't you could use Windstrips to reinforce them.
2. Though they were originally developed for use in the roofing industry with 30 Lb taraper, house wrap is a natural follow up. Since house wraps are generally tougher than 30Lb felt paper they should actually hold up better than the 128 mph winds they have successfully protected tarpaper in. It was suggested at the IBS that you could use Windstrips to not only secure house wrap better but at the same time use them to mark where your studs are for nailing siding, doing away with the need to chalk lines cutting out a time consuming step in the process.
3. A remodel contractor in Colorado is using them to secure vapor barrier to the interior of the building envelope so the insulation can be blown in and the dry wall put up afterwards. Other possible uses would be in the mobile home industry to secure the wrap for transit in stead of having to use strips of wood as well as securing wraps for lumber in transit so it stays clean and dry to its destination.
4. Because of its simplicity and durability we are sure that folks will find other uses in other industries that we have yet to discover. Use your imagination.
HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF MAKING A GUN TO ALLOW FOR ONE HANDED OPERATION?
Absolutely! In fact we have a working prototype that we are in the process of refining and testing that we will release for sale as soon as it works to the satisfaction of our design team. If you would like us to send you information when it is ready for distribution please click the following link and we will be sure to get in touch with you. We commit to holding your personal information in the strictest of confidence.
OTHER THOUGHTS AND IDEAS
1. In areas where they cover as they go Windstrips could be used as a quality improvement sales tool. Roofers that choose to use Windstrips® “take the extra step” which sets them apart. They are different, “better” then the competition because they use Windstrips®.
2. Windstrips are very distinctive. You can see them from a distance, nice straight lines every 3 feet up the roof. The installation just looks better.
3. The fact they can be seen easily lets supervisors know at a glance that the dry-in is completed properly.
4. There have been companies in Colorado that use them to print their phone number right on the roof in big numbers for all the neighbors to see. Use your imagination.
